I shave wet and have found an excellent product to lubricate my face before I shave which doesn't dry out my skin. Shea Moisture Organic Olive&Green Tea Shea Butter Soap. In the shower or using the sink, I wet up my face and gently rub the bar directly over the areas I am going to shave, wet up the blade and just shave. The soap is so gentle and makes my skin so smooth the shaver glides across my face removing all the stubble effortlessly WITHOUT any irritation. Afterwards, I rinse my face with cold water and the moisturizers in the soap actually make it feel softer. My girlfriend now comments favorably about how smooth my face feels, no longer scratchy. I have used virtually every shaving gel and cream and never got this smooth a shave without cuts and irritation. When I travel I just cut a piece of the bar off and keep it in my travel kit. The bar is large and will last a very long time so don't let the price put you off, it is worth every penny. It is also great as a soap as well leaving my skin feeling smooth and soft without the harsh smell of strong perfumes. Great product!

I have used three different varieties of the Shea Moisture soaps. I love them. I've never before found a soap that makes my skin soft and heals roughness. This soap healed my rough, dry hands. I will say I am able to buy it in a local chain drugstore at a much lower price.

I have been looking for a facial cleanser that does not dry my skin out. The first time I used this bar I knew I had found a keeper. I have spent countless dollars on products that claimed they were gentle and would not dry my skin out. After using those products, my skin was always very tight, dry and ashy.

AHAVA Mineral Salt Soap, 3.4 oz.

We learned about this soap when our daughter brought us back a sample from Israel; we wish we had known about it years ago! It has completely cleared up the KP on my arms, which I have had all of my life. My husband has had a skin condition on his arms that even the dermatologist was baffled by. It is now starting to clear up! I can not say enough positive things about this product, it truly is amazing.

This soap really is amazing. It softens skin, cleans without drying and smells wonderful. I have psoriasis and this soap has helped greatly, in conjunction with other dead sea salt/mineral products I have found, to keep the scales to a minimum. When I use this soap regularly, the cracking, bleeding and itching that usually occur with a flare up are minimized. Amazing product that has lasted 2 months so far, with care to keep the bar dry after use. Worth every penny.

I used this soap bar all up, but I didn't notice any particularly healing/soothing/nourishing qualities about it. Since then, I have found a number of much more natural soaps, without ingredients like Potassium Lauryl Sulfate or Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, etc. that are found in this soap. Also, in case anyone reading this is allergic to corn, you may want to read the ingredient list: when I bought it, this soap included "Corn (Zea Mays) Starch," which may be problematic.

Some sources I've found for more natural soaps are Tropical Traditions (www dot tropicaltraditions.com/organic_natural_soaps.htm) and Herbaria (www dot herbariasoap.com/faqs.html#i1). My sister recently also bought me a really nice soap bar on sale in Anthropologie, and it has a simple, clean ingredient list.

Sodium lauryl sulfate (one of the top five ingredients in this soap) is a known skin irritant and shouldn't be present in any high-end product.

I wouldn't recommend using this on anyone. I'm sure Ahava has other soap products out there without this skin-unfriendly one.

If you have psoriasis, this is the best product for helping to normalize your skin. Takes a couple of weeks to take effect, but it is worth it. And if you miss a few days, it reactivates the effect quickly. The smell is nice too.

Yardley English Lavender French milled soap has a true lavender fragrance and makes a very nice lather. The bar lasts quite some time and it will last even longer if it is aged for a few months prior to use (although it will lose some of the smell) so I usually unwrap it and place it in my dresser drawers and linen closet where it gives a clean, delicate scent to the items stored there.

Not only is this a good quality soap, it is readily available and is much less expensive than soap of similar quality imported from Europe. The English Rose and and especially the Lemon Verbena scents are also quite nice but the lavender remains my favorite. If you have stuck with Ivory and have never used a French milled soap, give this a try. Highly recommended.

For me, the major selling point for this soap is the fact that it smells like winter, not so much like Christmas -especially since I purchased this soap at the last BBW semi-annual sale where they were clearancing out all of the holiday items. This soap has something has a deeper and more exotic scent than you might expect for something labeled with a seemingly bland sentiment. I really enjoy the somewhat wild and unexpected smell of it, and it really lingers nicely on my hands after I finish washing them.

I would recommend this soap as a great winter scent that doesn't feel too holiday or even too firmly set in the winter months. Admittedly not my favorite BBW soap, but still wonderful.

Pears Natural Glycerine Soap 4.4oz (Pack of 24 Bars)

This soap feels nice, lathers well, is easy on the skin. Based upon other reviews, the smell should have been good too. Unfortunately, it is not. It smells like the inside of a barroom mop bucket. They should clean house in their olfactory division. Just don't clean it with this stuff. Apparently, I've got the new version, made in India with artificial modern noxious-smelling ingredients. Wish I hadn't gone the economy route and purchased so many of the damn things. I'm afraid to throw them out and create a new Love Canal. Apparently, plans are in the works to change the scent, but nothing else. It's too bad they ruined a 200-yr old brand.

Update (2011):

A company spokesman states:

"You will be pleased to hear that although some changes were made in October 2009, Unilever India have listened to their customers and are revising the product again and it will be much closer to the original by March this year." (2010).

The Wikipedia article on Pears Soap suggests that that has not, in fact, happened. In any case, they are essentially admitting the original formula is gone. Probably forever.

After reading all the reviews, specifically the ones that say it smells way different and is a different formula, I decided to look for myself. Wikipedia really spells out a lot of what is going on with this soap. Up until just a few years ago they have had the same formula from 1789 all the way up to 2003. Then they started changing it. It started being made in India. they started using alcohol and a whole list of other ingredients. Look for yourself:

I won't be buying any. I used to love this soap. But I'm not going to even try it now that the formula has changed. I'll stick with Basis or Sebamed.

it is not delightfully mild smelling or long lasting. I urge you to research this product before buying. I learned the hard way. It is not what you have fond memories of. Very disappointing.

It's definitely not the same fine soap we had enjoyed for so many years.

I ordered this PEARS soap because I have always loved the smell more than anything. I've used this soap for like 30 years. When it came and I opened it and used it, the smell was not the usual, but way more like a bad chemical smell. Apparently, the PEARS company was sold to another and the same old soap with the wonderful smell is no longer in production. So sad.

Raw African Black Soap From Ghana, Pure and Organic

I read about this product at several places on the Internet and when I found it here on Amazon at a fair price I bought it.

I liked the fact that this raw product is in a close shape to a normal bar of soap and the packaging is great; each bar is wrapped separately. I have been using it for almost 2 weeks now as my only soap, face/shower/shampoo and I love it.

I read that you shouldn't use it directly in the hair as the hair will wind itself into the soap and you won't be able to get it out.

NOT SO FOR ME....but let me say I have a very short haircut for a women so it's not an issue for me. I do think that if you have longer hair, rub the soap in your hands and then your hands into your hair. A little goes a long way and it lathers very nicely. I also love how my legs feel after I shave with this product. In case this helps someone, I am caucasian.

I have spent 100s of dollars trying out different black soaps. So trust me when I say, "I have tried them all". First let me say, the PACKAGING of this product is THE BEST OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for taking time out and thinking about the end users of your product!! I am able to store it after use in the package that it came in!!! Which means everything to me!

Now on to the soap.... it deep cleans without irritating my skin!!!! And safe enough for me to let it sit on my face for a few before I rinse it off! I have seen IMPROVEMENTS in my skin since using this soap... Finally on the right path to an even skin complexion!

I have been using this soap for three weeks. I use it for my whole body and face. My face had little blemishes and some pimples and now they're completely gone. The dark spots are lightning up. After the first week I dealt with a little dryness around my lips and chin and I broke out a bit but that was my face trying to get used to a new product. I use 4:1 water to apple cider vinegar as toner and that helps with the dryness. Google apple cider vinegar.

I love soap, clean smelling, natural soaps. I gave up chemical products a few years ago because I was sick of posioning myself everyday, and I now have continued using natural products.
