OK, I collect soaps, I have been a soap afficionado for decades and this soap is right at the top of my list. Be advised it does not smell like oranges but has an incredible fresh clean scent that is simply fantastic! If you're around a lot of people every day this soap is perfect as it does not overpower but rather smells like fresh clean laundry. I've always thought sheets straight from the wash smell better than anything else and this soap has that same scent. Just wonderful. Try it!
Raw African Black Soap from Ghana 1 Lb
My wife has had trouble with acne her whole life and is always looking for something to help her skin. After reading the reviews she was up for trying this out.At first she was really impressed with how well it cleaned. She used it once a day in the morning and her acne decreased initially, with breakouts taking less time to clear. She was a little concerned at how dry her skin was but since it helped she kept using it.
After about 3 weeks she started having more trouble with breakouts and stopped using the soap. Overdrying her skin caused it to increase oil production to compensate (so she tells me) and that lead to increased skin problems. She's back to her old regimen of commercial products and managing to keep her skin looking good.
She says she recommends this product but it's not for everyone, and if you use the soap be aware of how much it dries out skin.
I have a science background and was curious about how this soap affected her skin. Another reviewer determined the pH of this soap to be 10 (above 7 is alkaline, below 7 is acidic with 7 being neutral). I did some reading and learned a lot more about skin than I thought I would. The average skin pH of a healthy adult is roughly in the range of 4.5 to 6.0, and this is because of a thin layer called the acid mantle. The acid mantle is a mixture of oil produced by the skin and sweat. The acid mantle protects the skin from the elements as well as bacteria and viruses. If the acid mantle is stripped off or neutralized (i.e. loses its acidity) then the skin is more susceptible to damage and infection. Bacteria favor a higher pH, so the lower pH of the acid mantle kills them. Remove the acid mantle and bacteria can grow, which may lead to breakouts.
Washing with a very alkaline soap like this will strip away the acid mantle. That's why many of the reviewers comment on how drying the soap is, because the acid mantle is made up in part of natural oils produced by the skin. Most bar soaps have a pH of 9 which is why they're not recommended for facial use (cleansers have a lower pH). This soap is a really strong bar soap.
I'm not saying you shouldn't buy this soap. I'm just sharing what I found out when I started reading about skin and soap. I hope you found the information useful. Please add anything I missed or correct any mistakes I made in the comments to this review.

I've been on a mission to go completely chemical free with what I put on my body. I did a lot of research, and this soap seemed to fit the bill being completely chemical free. When used it feels deliciously slippery and emollient, however, I find it very drying to the skin. I tried to make shampoo from it. There are several videos on youtube by African American women which looked great. I am caucasian but I thought i'd give it a try without all the oils that they used, because I tried making other shampoos with oils and I looked like an oil slick.With pH strips in hand, a mixture of water and this soap came to a whopping big 10! I do think that when a lot of oils are added then it may cancel out the higher pH.
I loved how creamy it got naturally on it's own, and thought that if I could only get the pH down to 5 or six without destroying the creaminess it would be fantastic shampoo! I ended up adding tons of lemon juice, Aloe Vera, and believe it or not even Kefir which is also very acidic. It took forever to get the pH down! It became very thin and my bubble was burst. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that It can work by adding powdered citric acid and water. I would NEVER EVER recommend putting this product straight on the hair unless you want a brittle tangled mess that you can't comb out! It would damage the hair. It is TWICE higher than pH should be for skin and hair alike. That is why it dries the skin out. I think that if using this product a body wash should be made from this soap somehow adjusting the pH. I believe then it will be an excellent product. I'll try some powdered citric acid before I give up. :)

Okay let me just say I will def. be buying more if this soap!! My new little daughter from China has very sensitive skin to soaps but this is very gentle and very creamy on her skin!! It dries up any little pimples on her skin and leaves it moisturized from all the creamy oils it has in it. Oh so natural and pure!! We love it!! I even use it on her hair and that to is very shinny!! Her black hair just shimmers in the sun!! Between the Omega 3's and this soap.... I have extremely oily skin and this was a skin saver, at first...I would use it in the morning and it soaked up all of my oil for most of the day. I no longer had to worry about the midday chicken grease face because it was no longer oily. But after a few months, my face became overly dry and ashy-that never happens to my skin, ever. I learned that my skin was being stripped of it's natural oils and went haywire. So I stopped using it and my skin returned to it's regular oily state.I also used this soap as a shampoo and it worked wonders, at first...I would wash my hair once a week and this soap really got rid of any oil or gunk on my scalp and left my hair feeling refreshed every week. But after a few months, my scalp began to burn and my hair was super dry and rough to touch-which never happened to me before. Once I stopped using it my hair returned to it's natural state.
Overall, I think this can be effective, but use it every once in a while. It seems to be a temporary fix to your problems and I am torn between my like and dislike of this product.

The soap gives a good lather and does not irritate sensitive skin. However, it does not seem to clean that well because deodorant residue is usually left behind on my underarms after showering. I'll just stick with Canus Goat Milk Soap that lathers and cleanses thoroughly. Nice smelling soap though.

Most soaps are so harsh on my sinuses that they cause sinus infections. Even other so-called hypo-allergenic soaps irritate me, but this soap does not bother my sinuses at all. On top of my sinus issue, I also have oily Irish skin and a lot of soaps don't cut it, but this one is great for that too. I love this soap.

We found Soaprocks in a little shop in Deadwood ND and had a hard time deciding which one to buy because they all were beautiful and so fragrant. Finally bought the Tiger Eye, thinking we would give it to our son. When we got home, we became selfish and decided to give it to ourselves! The scent is wonderful and it takes very little to make a rich, luxurious lather. The feeling it leaves in the skin is beyond belief. Almost like you've applied lotion after your shower. We can't wait to try the others.

I found these products through Drugstore.com several years ago and I'm so happy to see them here on Amazon now. All of the soaps in this line lather well and have a remarkable natural scent nothing smells artificial/fake. After I bought the first soap, Green Tea and Peppermint, I loved it so much I bought one of everything they sell. I'm a fan for life I'll never buy another soap again!The Nilla Buttermilk is one of the mildest and smoothest in the line. A lightly scented, gentle bar, great especially for nighttime baths. There's no one plant extract that really stands out with this soap and certainly the coconut is so smooth that it doesn't smell like a bad suntan lotion as I've found with so many coconut bath bars. The Joyful Bath Co. did an excellent job of blending the extracts in this particular bar into a very pleasant experience.
There's no soapy film afterwards and it leaves you feeling clean.
South Of France Bar Soap
I bought these South of France soaps on several occasions. They are wonderful! The ingredient list is what really makes me happy (no soy--90% of the US soy production is genetically modified!).They smell great and feel great. The only complaint i have is that sometimes, if you don't use them every day, the soap starts to crack. Other than that, the soaps are wonderful! I highly recommend them!

I LOVE this brand of soap, but do not buy from this seller. What I ordered (according to the description listed here) was a glass bottle of the Figue soap, with a pump as shown. My soap showed up in a cheap plastic bottle, no pump and the inside of the box was all soapy from a broken seal. I'm so sad, its going back today.
The cost is offset by the the smaller amount required to wash hands with.
I urge anyone to try this product.

This is thinner soap than I am used to. The smell is great and I love the glass bottle. There was some minor leaking. The company should package it with a cap and sent the pump separately to address this.
Caswell-Massey Oatmeal Bath Soap
Weight of 5.8 oz vs shipping weight of 13.6 suggests that there might be two bars? Still very, very pricey, whether one or two bars @ $25. I am looking for a replacement for the Pure and Simple Oatmeal soap that used to be carried by Williams-Sonoma but this soap is too expensive to sample.

Mysore Sandalwood Soap 150g Double Size (Pack of 3)
I have tried a few sandalwood products (even expensive Roger and Gallet) and this one is the best value for the price. The scent is strong and lasts on your skin for a few hours, the bar does not dry or split and it makes good lather till nothing is left.
I do need to mention one odd thing though: On a few occasions, I think this soap has altered my sense of taste. For instance, even hours after using it, I've had red wine taste like sandalwood to me (but not to my drinking buddy). Powerful stuff!
If you have an Indian grocer nearby, they usually sell the 150g size for two bucks, or the 75g size for a buck.
