I doubt I'll even use it. If I put something that perfumed on my body, I typically end up with hives. This is the only soap that I use for my son's allergic skin. He's very sensitive and this is the only product that I will use on him. It lathers up very well and its easy to rinse off. Doesn't have any scent at all but it keeps him clean and thats' all I want!!!

At first she was really impressed with how well it cleaned. She used it once a day in the morning and her acne decreased initially, with breakouts taking less time to clear. She was a little concerned at how dry her skin was but since it helped she kept using it.
After about 3 weeks she started having more trouble with breakouts and stopped using the soap. Overdrying her skin caused it to increase oil production to compensate (so she tells me) and that lead to increased skin problems. She's back to her old regimen of commercial products and managing to keep her skin looking good.
She says she recommends this product but it's not for everyone, and if you use the soap be aware of how much it dries out skin.
I have a science background and was curious about how this soap affected her skin. Another reviewer determined the pH of this soap to be 10 (above 7 is alkaline, below 7 is acidic with 7 being neutral). I did some reading and learned a lot more about skin than I thought I would. The average skin pH of a healthy adult is roughly in the range of 4.5 to 6.0, and this is because of a thin layer called the acid mantle. The acid mantle is a mixture of oil produced by the skin and sweat. The acid mantle protects the skin from the elements as well as bacteria and viruses. If the acid mantle is stripped off or neutralized (i.e. loses its acidity) then the skin is more susceptible to damage and infection. Bacteria favor a higher pH, so the lower pH of the acid mantle kills them. Remove the acid mantle and bacteria can grow, which may lead to breakouts.
Washing with a very alkaline soap like this will strip away the acid mantle. That's why many of the reviewers comment on how drying the soap is, because the acid mantle is made up in part of natural oils produced by the skin. Most bar soaps have a pH of 9 which is why they're not recommended for facial use (cleansers have a lower pH). This soap is a really strong bar soap.
I'm not saying you shouldn't buy this soap. I'm just sharing what I found out when I started reading about skin and soap. I hope you found the information useful. Please add anything I missed or correct any mistakes I made in the comments to this review.I sent this to a friend who has the MOST sensitive skin on earth. I told her to expect that it would look a little like a piece of a tree trunk, so she knew it wasn't going to look like industrial supermarket soap. She got her serrated vegetable knife, whacked off a nice chunk, and ran to wash her face to see how her skin reacted. She reports that she is VERY happy with soft skin and NO ITCHING!

I've been on a mission to go completely chemical free with what I put on my body. I did a lot of research, and this soap seemed to fit the bill being completely chemical free. When used it feels deliciously slippery and emollient, however, I find it very drying to the skin. I tried to make shampoo from it. There are several videos on youtube by African American women which looked great. I am caucasian but I thought i'd give it a try without all the oils that they used, because I tried making other shampoos with oils and I looked like an oil slick. With pH strips in hand, a mixture of water and this soap came to a whopping big 10! I do think that when a lot of oils are added then it may cancel out the higher pH.
I loved how creamy it got naturally on it's own, and thought that if I could only get the pH down to 5 or six without destroying the creaminess it would be fantastic shampoo! I ended up adding tons of lemon juice, Aloe Vera, and believe it or not even Kefir which is also very acidic. It took forever to get the pH down! It became very thin and my bubble was burst. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that It can work by adding powdered citric acid and water. I would NEVER EVER recommend putting this product straight on the hair unless you want a brittle tangled mess that you can't comb out! It would damage the hair. It is TWICE higher than pH should be for skin and hair alike. That is why it dries the skin out. I think that if using this product a body wash should be made from this soap somehow adjusting the pH. I believe then it will be an excellent product. I'll try some powdered citric acid before I give up. :)

I have extremely oily skin and this was a skin saver, at first...I would use it in the morning and it soaked up all of my oil for most of the day. I no longer had to worry about the midday chicken grease face because it was no longer oily. But after a few months, my face became overly dry and ashy-that never happens to my skin, ever. I learned that my skin was being stripped of it's natural oils and went haywire. So I stopped using it and my skin returned to it's regular oily state.I also used this soap as a shampoo and it worked wonders, at first...I would wash my hair once a week and this soap really got rid of any oil or gunk on my scalp and left my hair feeling refreshed every week. But after a few months, my scalp began to burn and my hair was super dry and rough to touch-which never happened to me before. Once I stopped using it my hair returned to it's natural state.
Overall, I think this can be effective, but use it every once in a while. It seems to be a temporary fix to your problems and I am torn between my like and dislike of this product.

I love soaps but I often do not buy them, even if they're from France or Italy, because most of them contain toxic substances like Tetrasodium EDTA (linked to cancer in government studies) and a myriad of others horrible unnamable substances. I really don't get the thinking, or rather the lack of thinking that goes into the creation of cosmetic products. Soap goes directly on the skin which has extraordinary absorption abilities, and yet they make a product meant to clean the skin filled with toxic agents, insuring that the unsuspecting consumer will absorb known carcinogens through their skin on a daily basis??? Anyway, I'm not going to get going with this or this review is going to turn into a book.Once in a while, I'll discover a Rose scented soap made in India that has a lovely smell and no toxic chemicals, but still, nothing like this newly discovered soap. I picked up a box of Olivia Care French Verbena in a store and read the description on the back, expecting the usual list of horrible ingredients. But to my surprise, it just read:
Soap Made From: Palm Oils and Palm Kernel Oils
Contains: Olive oil, Water, Glycerin and Pure Essential oil for fragrance.
Hallelujah!!!! So, I grabbed another box to give as a gift. Then, I went on to read the little story on the back of the box:
"The year was 1805. Emperor Napoleon directed Eugene Michel to create a special soap for his beloved Josephine. This exclusive formula, jealously guarded by generations of soap masters, comes to you in a special blend of pure natural essential oils from the famous region of France. The soap is made with pure olive oil. Some people call it the miracle cure. Rich in Calcium and vitamin E, it has been used as time immemorial as a beauty secret for the face and the body".
So I grabbed all the boxes I could find in the entire store.
It was really interesting to me that a soap could really beautify the skin. I am so sold on night creams and day creams, wrinkle creams, eye creams and everything else that the idea of a little bar of soap doing anything but drying the skin???. However, when see women over a certain age who have amazing skins, I always ask them what they do to have such beautiful skins. Most of them answer they just use soap and water. I've always had a hard time believing them, and was always convinced they just didn't want to reveal their secret.
Anyway, I went home that night and made a point to use my new soap instead of skin cleanser. And I was so glad I did. I could NOT believe my eyes!!! I used it in the shower on my whole body but also especially on my face, hands and neck. When mixed with water, it turns into this creamy substance, unlike any soap I have ever tried. And the amazing thing is that if feels squeeky clean when you rinse it off, but it still does something amazing to the skin. After one time!!! It instantly took 10 years off my whole body. My face had a beautiful glow, my hands looked incredibly youthful and the rest of my body had this incredible softness and glow. I am going to stock up on it for gifts and for my family, but the reason I wanted to write the review is so people would try it and the company would keep exporting. This is truly the best and cheapest beauty product I have ever tried. And I've probably tried them all (non-toxic ones that is).

I read all of the reviews before I bought this soap. It was totally amazing how much lather it gives! Incredible! Our water is so hard here that soaps and shampoos give the minimal in lather, but this soap sudsed right up with an impressive amount of lather but it rinses really clean too. (Reminds me of how soap and shampoo used to work when I visited Florida.) The aroma is delicate; I wouldn't mind if they made that stronger, but it is quite pleasant as it is. I will absolutely reorder this item or even try one of their other scents.Want Olivia Care Olive Oil Soap , Verbena, 8-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 4) Discount?

Really amazing for my skin and its awesome. Helps keep all the LA grime and dirt out of your skin and it feels really softSouth of France Shea Butter Bar Soap, 8.8 oz (Multi-Pack)

I purchased South of France Shea Butter soap two days ago (not from amazon but a local retailer) and LOVE it! Here's why:
1) It smells very clean and nice when I use it, but not overpowering and it does not make me sneeze.
2) It leaves my skin less dry than my other soap.
3) It lathers well.
4) It's very inexpensive!
5) I like the subtle, non-irritating scent it leaves on my skin.
I'm going to try the other scents to see if I have the same results!South of France soaps are an absolute winner. They're a heavenly experience. They lather nicely and feel like silk in your hands and on your body. They're sensitive without the toxins found in many soaps, leaving my super sensitive skin absolutely free from itchiness, flaking, or any sign of allergic reaction. The scents are subtle, not overpowering. And, these soaps are so inexpensive they can be used everywhere throughout your house! The 8.8 ounce bars are available for $3.54 (nope, that's not a typo) through an e-bay seller, and you only pay about $6 for shipping no matter how many bars you order. Can you beat that for a high quality soap? I don't think so. Oh ... I forgot to mention: this fine French-milled soap is hard enough that it doesn't melt away, yet like I mentioned, lathers beautifully. There's only one drawback and it's easily fixed. The 8.8 ounce bars are a bit large to manage at first. I remedy this problem by taking a super sharp chef's knive and cutting each bar into three to four easily handled pieces. These soaps are so heavenly that you'll find yourself washing your hands and face longer than you probably need to because it's such a divine experience. Not to worry the soaps are never drying. In my experience, you can't go wrong with these soaps, whether buying for yourself or as a gift. Try the lemon verbena, almond, orange ginger, and lime basil for starters.

I got 2 of these, one for me and one for a friend and they are great soaps. The shea butter one just smells like plain old soap, but the almond one smells divine (sweet and almondy). The bars are huge. I have yet to finish one so I can't say exactly how long they last. They're about the size of a regular commercial soap box (like ivory or dove boxes). Unlike other soaps, they don't dry my skin out yet they get me squeaky clean. The soap is easy to lather up and has no harsh chemical ingredients, only good for you oils.Read Best Reviews of South of France Shea Butter Bar Soap, 8.8 oz (Multi-Pack) Here
I found this soap at my local drugstore for $3.99 for a 2 pack (8.8 oz).Thought I'd give it a try and wow do I love it. Very nice but not
overpowering light scent and lathery as the day is long.
Now I'm spoiled and don't want to use anything else.
Try it if you're thinking about it, you won't be disappointed.

Too Luxurious and Too Gentle To Be Called "Soap", November 30, 2010By
Marc Sevier "Fleischer Studio Fan" (Birmingham, AL, USA)
Henry J. Kaiser once said,in essence: "If you want to succeed, find a need and fill it." The creation of SOUTH of FRANCE Body Care Bars finally filled a glaring need which, for decades, there was no product. No one seems to know why, but no bath bar manufacturer seemed to be interested in producing a gentle, non-toxic, long-lasting French-milled bath bar for the health-conscious consumer.
In today's super-toxic environment, Cancer has replaced cardiovascular disease as the No. 1 killer of Americans. Statistically, Americans chances of developing cancer are now ONE-IN-THREE! No wonder then that a growing number of environmentally-smart Americans want to better their odds of falling ill with a terminal case of cancer or other disease.
With the arrival of the 'world wide web' many of today's consumers have become wary, educated label detectives. Only dumb luck and the fastidious, well-read consumer escapes chronic disease. South Of France Body Care Bar users know, only too well, that ANY chemical that touches the skin can enter the bloodstream, e.g., the various chemical-impregnated 'skin patches': nicotine, estrogen, progesterone, etc., etc.
Many common ingredients now widely used in the production of soap and detergents are known systemic toxins. Sodium laurel sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, tetrasodium EDTA, paraben and phthalates just to name a few. Most toxic chemical ingredients widely used in soap production are plentiful and cheap. Conversely, high-quality, nontoxic ingredients that can be used in soap production are relatively scarce and expensive.
The makers of South Of France Body Care Bars have chosen to produce a gentle, luxuriantly-rich, delicate and exquisitely scented, PREMIUM long-lasting FRENCH-MILLED product WITHOUT toxic ingredients. FRENCH-MILLED means that a bath bar product has been produced without water being used as a cheap 'filler' ingredient. Amazingly, South Of France has made the product at an affordable price.
If you value your family's health, do yourself a favor: buy it. Bathing can actually be a 'treat' instead of a toxic 'treatment.' End of story.

I decided to try this product because I have eczema. I have been using the soap for a couple of days and it works great.I noticed that my skin was not itchy and even the inflamation and redness was less. Pre de Provence Soap, Lavender, 8.8 -Ounce Cello Wrap

... this being a bar of soap that is throughly embedded with real lavender buds that yield even more fresh scent and create a mild exfoliating effect.
... this being a bar of soap made only with natural ingredients such as olive oil and shea butter and herbal oils.
The result is a soap that is far more soothing to the skin and the nose and the soul than any bottle of gel goo you'll get off your grocery store shelf. This product will cause you to look forward to every shower.
This company and others like it vend at least a dozen scents, but as far as I can tell, it is Provence lavender that is overwhelmingly preferred in French soaps.
Many soaps in this genre claim to be a product of France, tripled-milled according to the ancient tradition of "Savon de Marseille" (soap of Marseilles.) I did a little research and Googling and here are some facts I found interesting:
* According to the Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur Tourist Board website "Today, only a half-dozen soap factories remain in Marseilles and Salon de Provence."
* According to French law, only 45% of a product's added value must be sourced in France for it to be labeled "Product of France."
* I was unable to locate a website for the Pre de Provence company or a number of other popular French soap brands listed at french soaps .
* The trademark for Pre de Provence is held by a small distributing company in Washington state.
* The tourist board website also says that the traditional Savon de Marseille process yields only soaps that are light green or wheat in color.
* That website and others show that a traditional Savon de Marseille is typically cubic in shape and has a distinctive and odd debossing.
* a somewhat similar product to this one sells in my local supermarket and it (unlike this product) does come labeled with a list of ingredients: "100% vegetable oils (palm, coconut a/or oil), shea butter, mineral, pigment and clay, natural fragrance, and or essential oils." I watched a TV show about soap making in Marseilles and, as far as I can tell, this list mimics well the ingredients in classic Savon de Marseille. Next time you are in the grocery store, take a moment to read what's in mass-marketed soap. Makes you wonder why you haven't wondered before.
Even with those facts giving me a bit to wonder as to exactly how or where Pre de Provence is produced, the product is nonetheless fantastic. I've tried several products of this genre and, so far, this seems the very best. And it's a bargain compared to many other products in the genre.
Sure, it's more expensive than supermarket soap. And because of the volume of buds, it goes quicker. But on a per day basis, this does not cost that much more. Like I said, if you are willing to fork out what amounts to about $2,000 per pound for coffee at S***bucks, or $5 for a bottle of mass market body scrub gel, then you can certainly afford to treat yourself to a few bars of this stuff.
Then, if you like it, The Frenchy Bee will sell it in bulk, bringing down the cost even more.
Besides, you get to tell everyone at work that you were late again because you were rinsing all the lavender buds out of your tub.
Give it a go.
UPDATE (12/2009): This now comes in a lavender bar WITHOUT the lavender buds. Oui! For all the lovers of pure lavender, this perfectly wonderful, long lasting, animal friendly bar of soap is the ideal lavender soap. Rich lather, luscious full bodied fragrance that lingers; there is none that compare to this bar. It is beautiful to look at as well as fabulous to use.

I was really suprised at how big this bar was when I received it. Even though it is a large bar it is easy to hold on to. It's lightly exfoliating with the little chunks in it. It smells great but isn't too strong, and I could still smell it on my skin throughout the day. It's well worth the money.Read Best Reviews of Pre de Provence Soap, Lavender, 8.8 -Ounce Cello Wrap Here
I got this one a month ago and there is a little more than half still left of the soap. Long-lasting. The scent of Lavendar is awesome. However, it is overpowering and may not be liked by all. The exfoliant in the soap is great for cleansing the skin, although it tends to make the skin dry a little (much better than other soaps which cause a lot of dryness and do not even clean). I will deifnitely recommend this soap to all "lovers of lavendar".Want Pre de Provence Soap, Lavender, 8.8 -Ounce Cello Wrap Discount?
I came onto Amazon looking for this soap because it seems as if everything I find on Amazon is a great deal, and a better price that I can find anywhere locally and also online. The suggested retail of this product has been marked up quite a bit, so it seems as if you are saving. This is disappointing. I am a supporter of local business, especially when their prices are comparable. This bar of soap is sold for $6.00 in stores, this is true for Colorado and California both. In terms of the quality of this soap, I absolutely can't say enough good things about it. I gift these soaps all the time. It's such a huge bar of soap, I cut it in half, so it doesn't erode in the shower as much. It really is like buying 2 bars of soap. I would like to encourage you to go to your local boutique that sells soap, and try and find it. It will probably be a better price, and if you aren't an Amazon Prime member, that will also save you on shipping costs.
