A Wild Soap Bar Shaving Organic Soap Bar, 3.5 Ounce

A Wild Soap Bar - Black Willow bark shaving soapReally good shaving soap. Lasted me 3-6 months. It does have a strong scent, but it is really pleasant. Not for people who dislike cinnamon.

I got the sassafras version and the smell is magnificent. Exotic but not floral. Spicy but not musky. Refreshing but not minty. Strong and complex enough to wake you up but not lingering.

Sadly, the lather also does not linger. It's easy enough to whip up a good volume of lather but as mentioned by others, is not a creamy and hearty lather. Instead it is light and dissipates quickly. It's fine if you lather up in sections as you progress through the shave but plan for some extra time. It's a little more work but I get a great shave with this soap. When I find myself with some extra time, I'll indulge myself to the fantastic aroma and not focus on the number of times I have to lather up.

I would normally rate this a one-star. I give the extra two stars, bringing it to three, on account of the ingredients in the soap. It's nice to see a company trying to make a healthy product. So for that, kudos.

However, this soap isn't working for me, not nearly as well as others I'm using along side it. Bear in mind, I have extremely hard water (still measurably hard in spite of using an over-sized GE softener), being in the California central valley region, so soaps are disadvantaged in my bathroom from the word go. Regardless, initially, using a badger brush, this soap lathers promisingly. But it falls short straight out of the cup. More soap, less soap, more water, less water, lather on your hand, in a cup or on your face, it doesn't matter. Within 30 seconds of application, the airy lather has fallen and it becomes really difficult to get a close smooth shave.

Not having a lot of luck finding a good soap in the natural/organic market, I'm sorry to say I will most likely reduce my standards to paraben-free on my next buy, and hopefully find something that does the trick.

It does smell nice, give it that. It would make a nice hand soap and this is what this is unfortunately destined for because as a shaving soap it is a total bust. As soon as the lather hits your face it is gone, dissolved into nothing. It's like shaving with cold water and sand. There is something missing in this soap, some ingredient lacking. It's like a scone made without butter--it looks okay but as soon as you take a bite you've got a mouthful of flour and all the moisture has been sucked out of your head. I hate starting the day with my face burning and bleeding--but smelling oh so nice!

This would be a 5-star review except for one thing: the strength of the lather. I am using a standard apothecary mug and have used various brushes (boar, horse, badger) and the lather takes a longer-than-average time to whip, and once applied it tends to dry up quickly. I have tried using more water, which makes the lather whip quicker and last longer, but then it's not of the proper consistency. I find myself re-wetting and reapplying far too frequently for my own taste.

That said, it may be a one-off experience and could be highly dependent upon other factors.

The scent of the soap is amazing. It's quite powerful; you can smell it just by standing in close proximity when the puck is dry.

All things considered, I like the soap and would re-order it, but I'll most likely only use it on weekends when I can take a long time for a relaxing shave. This is not a soap for those that need a quick morning routine.
